The State of Alaska (State), Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT & PF), Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), is soliciting letters of interest, from qualified offerors and/or other interested parties with the capacity and ability to purchase, acquire, preserve, repurpose, or otherwise take ownership of the M/V Matanuska.
The State is seeking information from interested parties regarding the opportunities to dispose of the vessel in a manner that honors its historic significance while allowing it to continue serving Alaska in new innovative ways. Through this Request for Information (RFI), the State invites thoughtful proposals for preservation, adaptive reuse, or continued maritime service that respects the vessel’s legacy and provide ongoing public value. Potential concepts may include maritime training, tourism, community or cultural use, education programming, museum or heritage preservation, research platforms, or other construction purposes that reflect Alaska’s maritime heritage and the history of the Alaska Marine Highway System.
Letters of interest proposing scrapping, dismantling, or scuttling the vessel may be submitted for informational purposes, but the State reserves the right to evaluate responses considering policy, historic preservation, operational, and public interest considerations.
This RFI does not extend any rights to prospective vendors or obligate the state to conduct a solicitation or purchase of any goods or services. Submissions/questions must be directed to email brandy.halverson@alaska.gov by April 14th, 2026, at 2:00pm Alaska Standard Time.
