West Hollis Timber Sale (SSE-1393-K)
Draft Forest Land Use Plan

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry (DFFP), gives formal notice per AS 38.05.945 that the Division proposes to adopt a site-specific Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) under AS 38.05.112 and the administrative standards of AS 41.17.060 for the commercial timber sale: West Hollis Timber Sale (SSE-1393-K).

The main access for this sale area is from the existing Prince of Wales Road System. The area of the sale is 11 miles west of Hollis ferry terminal on Prince of Wales Island on the Klawock-Hollis Highway. The sale is in two locations, one by the Hydaburg Road junction and the other near the old waste pit at Mile 23.5, west of the Harris River Road. The timber sale area is found within Sections 7, 10, 11, 17 and 18, Township 74 South, Range 83 East, Copper River Meridian (CRM). The sale area is found within the Craig B-3 USGS quadrangle.

The harvest units total approximately 96 acres and contain approximately 1,700 MBF of old growth timber.  This volume already has been sold under provisions of AS 38.05.118 to Viking Lumber Company Inc.

The FLUP is intended to provide the best available information regarding the proposed timber harvest on 96 acres, and the management of other non-timber uses in compliance with AS 38.05.112 and AS 41.17.060, and must be adopted by the DFFP before the proposed activity can occur. This FLUP does not determine whether or not to access and sell timber within the timber sale area, nor the method of sale. Those decisions have been made previously in the August 6, 2025 Best Interest Finding and are not appealable under this FLUP.

The public is invited to comment on the FLUP.  Comments should be mailed to the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, 2417 Tongass Avenue, Suite 213, Ketchikan, AK 99901.  Comments must be received at the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection office no later than January 8, 2026 in order to be considered in the adopted FLUP.  To be eligible to appeal the adopted FLUP, a person must have provided written comment by January 8, 2026.
