Parks Highway MP 356 Auxiliary Lane

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to construct an auxiliary lane along the north side of the Parks Highway.  The project’s east end would start a little past Geist Road where the existing two lanes merge into one lane, at approximate milepost (MP) 356.3.  Its western end would terminate west of Little Shot Road near MP 354.7 (Figure 1).  The auxiliary lane will be constructed entirely within existing DOT&PF right-of-way (ROW).

Other actions proposed under this project are to install new highway lighting, new highway signage, pavement markings, clear vegetation within DOT&PF right-of-way, relocate utilities, and drainage improvements as needed.  The proposed drainage improvements may include cleaning and reconditioning ditches, replace existing culverts, and install new culverts where needed.  The Happy Creek culvert will not be replaced.  Earthen material needed to construct this project will be contractor furnished.

The project is being developed in accordance with the following Executive Orders (EO): EO 11988 (Floodplain Management); EO 11990 (Wetlands Protection); EO 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment), and; EO 13112 (Invasive Species).

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by the DOT&PF pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated April 13, 2023, and executed by the Federal Highway Administration and DOT&PF.
