DOT&PF Notice of Public Open House: Klondike Highway Rehabilitation: Skagway River Bridge to Black Lake

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is planning a series of rehabilitation projects along the Klondike Highway from the Skagway River Bridge to the Canadian Border.

Project 1 will address deficiencies between Skagway River Bridge and Black Lake. The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the highway, enhance safety, and improve drainage.

Proposed work within the project corridor may include:
• Pavement Rehabilitation
• Roadway-Base Repair
• Drainage Roadside Hardware
• Utilities
• Signing
• Striping
• Bridge Repair
• River Weir Repairs

Future projects will be determined at a later date.

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by DOT&PF pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated April 13, 2023, and executed by Federal Highway Administration and DOT&PF.

Government agencies sometimes need to acquire additional property rights for public projects. Often this is only a temporary easement for access or construction. The U.S. Constitution promises private citizens the right to just compensation for property rights required for public use. The Uniform Act (49 CFR Part 24) is used to assure equitable treatment to property owners and that just compensation is provided for any additional property rights. The Right of Way (ROW) section will reach out direct to any property owners whose property is necessary for the construction of the project. The ROW Acquisition Brochure explains the rights and benefits of property owners whose real property is to be acquired.
