Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Northern Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT: University of Alaska Land Management

PROJECT NAME: LAS 36012

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: The proposed testing area is located west of Nenana, ranging roughly from milepost 319 to milepost 295 off the Parks Highway. Radar tower and trailer would be located off the Nenana-Totchaket Road at approximately 64.5756 N 149.5304 W.

REQUESTED ACTIVITY: The Division of Mining, Land and Water (DMLW) received a Land Use Permit (LUP) application from University of Alaska (UA) Land Management for the storage of one radar tower, trailer, and equipment on state land during June and July 2026. The proposed storage would take place during University of Alaska ACUASI’s controlled burning as they test autonomous vehicles and remote sensing equipment in a wildfire simulation. The temporary radar tower and radar trailer would be located off the Nenana-Totchaket Road at approximately 64.5756 N 149.5304 W. The radar tower would be up to 55 feet tall. One generator and 90-gallon fuel tank would be stored inside the radar trailer. Staff would be present during radar and generator operations. Equipment would include up to 30 drones and 1,200 gas sensors deployed within the proposed testing area. All fuel and batteries not in use would be stored at the Nenana ACUASI Hangar - Nenana Municipal Airport. All equipment and structures would be removed at the end of the monitoring program.
