Brief Description of Proposed Project:
Haines Huts and Trails and Alaska State Parks are seeking funding to construct a public-use cabin on the Ayiklutu Trail in the Twin Coves area of Chilkat State Park. The cabin would be roughly 14x16ft and built to accommodate around 6 people. Community members have repeatedly requested a more accessible public-use cabin, especially for families and elders. Public use cabins lower the barrier to participation for community members who many not have the gear, knowledge, or ability to camp traditionally, or, who would like increased protection from weather and wildlife for their families. The Ayiklutu Trail is one of the best, most accessible, and underutilized trails in Haines. Twin Coves is exactly halfway between the trailhead and Ayiklutu Point, perfectly positioning it to help increase access to the park for the public. Public use cabins that increase access to wild places are a primary goal identified in the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, which guides parks and recreation planning across the state. This is NOT a commercial-use cabin permit; the cabin would be open to the public, not commercial groups.
