DOT&PF Notice to Begin Engineering & Environmental Studies: Funter Bay Cannery Float Restoration

Project # SHARB00651

The Funter Bay Cannery Float facility in Funter Bay, Alaska sustained extensive damage over the winter, leaving portions unsafe and unusable until repairs can be completed. The shore access float, pedestrian gangway, and approach trestle are currently closed. As an interim measure, the gangway and damaged gangway float will be removed to further stabilize the site.

The primary mooring float remains available for transient boaters; however, shore access is not maintained until project completion. Remaining structures are in varying stages of deterioration and users should exercise caution. Large vessel use and unattended moorage are discouraged.

Concurrently, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) in partnership with the Alaska Department and Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) Program is proposing to restore the Funter Bay Cannery Float.

The proposed project includes:
• Removing and disposing of existing timber and steel piles
• Relocating a 10’ x 125’ float
• Refurbishing the 6’ x 119’ approach and existing 6’ x 50’ gangway
• Removing and replacing the existing 10’ x 50’ float with a new timber 12’ x 50’ float
• Removing and disposing of existing 24’ x 36’ seaplane float

Engineering development activities are anticipated to conclude in late fall 2026. Construction is projected to begin in 2027. The existing seaplane float is no longer in place and is not included in the restoration project due to funding limitations. Future installation may be considered if funding or circumstances allow.

DOT&PF is providing this notice for interested parties awareness and input. Your comments on the proposed project are welcome. Additional project information, including updates and materials, is available on the project website: https://dot.alaska.gov/sereg/projects/funter-bay-float
