The Council of Alaska Native Languages (CANL) was established by the State Legislature in 2012. Its mission is to recommend programs that support the preservation, restoration, and revitalization of Alaska Native languages. The voting members of the Council are language professionals dedicated to ensuring that all Alaska Native languages continue to thrive as living languages.

The Council develops strategies to ensure that all Alaska Native languages thrive as spoken languages within their native homelands. They collaborate closely with the Department of Education and Early Development to support and promote Alaska Native languages in schools throughout Alaska. The Council provides specific recommendations to the Governor of Alaska, the executive branch, and the Legislature. These recommendations detail actionable steps to enhance the status of Alaska Native languages and improve access to language learning resources for the people of Alaska.

The topics for the upcoming council meeting include reports from voting members of the Council, Reports from Legislative members of the Council or their Legislative Aides, and DEED staff report, and the discussion on the 2026 CANL Report to the Governor’s Office.

The council may amend its published agenda. Agenda times are estimates only, and the council may consider agenda items out of order without amending its agenda. The council also reserves the right to adjourn later than estimated on the published agenda.
