PUBLIC UTILITY EASEMENT
Pursuant to AS 38.05.850 and 11 AAC 05.070(d)(2)(C), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land and Water (DMLW), Southcentral Regional Lands Office (SCRO) is considering the issuance of a public utility easement in response to the following application:
APPLICANT: Calista Corporation
PROJECT NAME: Alaska FiberOptic (Broadband Internet) – Lower Kuskokwim Region
GEOGRAPHIC LOATION: Shorelands underlying navigable waterways near the communities of Akiachak, Akiak, Kwethluk, Lower Kalskag, Napakiak, Tuluksak and Upper Kalskag. Please see the attachments for additional information.
LEGAL DESCRIPTION:
- Seward Meridian Township 8 North, Range 69 West, Section 5;
- Seward Meridian Township 9 North, Range 69 West, Sections 5, 25, 26 and 36;
- Seward Meridian Township 12 North, Range 66 West, Sections 21, 22 and 27;
- Seward Meridian Township 13 North, Range 65 West, Section 13;
- Seward Meridian Township 14 North, Range 64 West, Sections 3, 10 and 20;
- Seward Merdian Township 15 North, Range 63 West, Sections 6 and 36;
- Seward Meridian Township 16 North, Range 63 West, Section 1.
REQUESTED ACTIVITY:
The applicant proposes to install, survey, operate and maintain fiber optic cable lines within several discontinuous segments of easement across State owned shorelands underlying the Gweek River, Israthorak Creek, Kuskokuak Slough, Kuskokwim River, Kwethluk River, Mud Creek, Tuluksak River, and Unnamed Slough(s) of the Kuskokwim River. Please see the attachments for additional information.
The overall easement area will be approximately 9,471 feet long by 30 feet wide for an approximate total area of 6.5 acres. If approved, the final location, area and dimension of the requested easement will be determined by a required as-built survey and may differ from that described above. Nothing herein implies the establishment of an easement on lands that are not managed by DNR-DMLW.
REQUESTED TERM: Indefinite.
DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS: December 22, 2025.
Members of the public and interested agencies are invited to comment on this activity. The purpose of this notice is to gather input before a decision is made.
