NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

October 8, 2025

Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Northern Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT: University of Alaska

PROJECT NAME: LAS 35717

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: The proposed sites are located near Wild Lake, south of the Brooks Range, approximately 40 miles west of Coldfoot.

LEGAL DESCRIPTION:

Sections 3, 9, and 11 of Township 31 North, Range 18 West, Fairbanks Meridian

Section 34 of Township 32 North, Range 18 West, Fairbanks Meridian

REQUESTED ACTIVITY:

The Division of Mining, Land, and Water (DMLW) has received a Land Use Permit (LUP) application from the University of Alaska (UA) to cut down and cross-section up to 300 white spruce trees located on active frozen debris lobes near Wild Lake. This study would utilize tree-ring analysis to infer slope movements, requiring the entire bole of each tree to be sampled. Research would be conducted at four separate sites, each comprising approximately 25 acres. To minimize visual impact, trees would be selectively cut in moderately forested areas using chainsaws. Access to the sites would be via float plane from Coldfoot to Wild Lake, then by canoe and on foot.

REQUESTED TERM: 2 years
