PUBLIC NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR WATER RIGHTS LAS 35365

 

Pursuant to Alaska Statue (AS) 46.15 and rules and regulations (11 Alaska Administrative Code [AAC] 93) promulgated thereunder, public notice is hereby given that an Application for Water Rights for water withdrawals from Cannery Creek has been received from Hecla Greens Creek Mine, PO Box 32199, Juneau Alaska 99803.  The applications were reviewed for accuracy and completeness and case files for these requested water uses have been created.

Priority Dates for Applications for Water Rights:

 

Application LAS 35365 has a priority date of January 24, 2025.    

 

Land Ownership and Areas of Appurtenance:

 

The Greens Creek Mine is located in southeast Alaska, in the Tongass National Forest near Hawk Inlet on Admiralty Island National Monument, approximately 18 miles southwest of Juneau, on U.S. Forest Service and private patented land within the City and Borough of Juneau.

 

The water rights application for Cannery Creek is for 34 acre-feet per year (AFY) for mining activities including man camp, industrial facilities, and dust suppression. The location of usage is Sections 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 15, 22, 23, 26, and 35, Township 43 South, Range 65 East, and Sections 2, 11, and 12, Township 44 South, Range 65 East, and Sections 4, 7, 8, and 9, Township 43 South, Range 66 East, Copper River Meridian.

 

Legal Description of Requested Water Sources:

 

The areas of appurtenance for LAS 35365 is for the approved mineral lease tract located within the USDA Forest Service PL 96-487 including all additional amendments. The dam is located within NW1/4 Section 26, Township 43 South, Range 65 East, Copper River Meridian.

Per AS 46.15.133 (a), within 15 days of publication or service of notice, persons may file with the director written objections, stating the name and address of the objector, and any facts tending to show that rights of the objector or the public interest would be adversely affected by the proposed sale, appropriation, or removal.

 

The public is invited to comment on these actions. The Water Resources Section must receive comments in writing by 5:00 p.m., May 12, 2025, at the above addresses to be considered. If issued, a permit may be extended for good cause shown, pursuant to AS 46.15.110 and 11 AAC 93.120(f), without additional public notice.
