PROJECT SUMMARY AND LOCATION: The Alaska Department of Transportation has applied to DEC for an aquatic pesticide use permit to apply pesticide to control vegetation growing in Lake Hood in Anchorage.

The proposed pesticides are:

  • Littora, with EPA registration number 67690-53, with active ingredient diquat dibromide.
  • Reward Landscape and Aquatic Herbicide, with EPA registration number 100-1091, with active ingredient diquat dibromide.
  • Sonar Genesis, with EPA registration number 67690-54, with active ingredient fluridone.
  • SonarOne, with active ingredient 67690-45, with active ingredient fluridone.

Treatment with Litorra or Reward Landscape and Aquatic Herbicide is proposed once each summer (June-August) throughout the duration of the permit. Treatment with SonarOne and Sonar Genesis would only occur if invasive Elodea is present, no more than once each summer (June-August) throughout the duration of the permit.

PROJECT NEED:

Lake Hood is an extremely busy floatplane airport. Vegetation in the water presents a safety hazard for taxiing, taking off, and landing on the lake. In addition, invasive elodea, if present, poses a threat of spreading to locations across Alaska. A pesticide use permit is required to apply pesticides to water.
