DOT&PF Notice of Section 106 Data Recovery Efforts: Skagway State Street Pavement Rehabilitation

Project # 68085

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to rehabilitate pavement on State Street in Skagway, Alaska.

Prior to rehabilitation of State Street, archaeological data recovery efforts are required as part of a Memorandum of Agreement reached with the Skagway Traditional Council and National Park Service.

This effort includes excavations at 12 locations adjacent State Street or at the entrance to specific alleyways connecting to the roadway. It is anticipated that half of the locations will be excavated by hand while the other half will require heavy equipment or machine assistance.

Traffic barriers and cones will outline the worksite and, depending on location, excavations would either be a small square hole dug by hand, or a short trench 3 feet wide and down to 4 feet deep using some machine assistance. Access to some sections of sidewalk and alleyways at these points will be temporarily closed until work is complete, which is anticipated to be a half or up to full day at each location.

Due to the sensitive nature of the work, please do not approach or disturb the archaeologists while they are actively working within an open excavation.

Data recovery efforts are anticipated to begin any time after May 13 and may last up to two weeks.

Construction of the project may only occur after data recovery efforts are complete. Current project scheduling anticipates construction could begin as early as August 2024 and would occur in three stages.
