RFP 2024-0500-0116 Alaska Reads Act Advisory Panel
Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) is seeking a vendor to provide facilitation and
coordination support for the department and implementation of an advisory panel to provide comments and recommendations to meet the requirements of the Alaska Reads Act.
The facilitator will ensure that DEED has stakeholder input on programs outlined in the Alaska Reads Act to ensure effective communication regarding programs and to help organize comments and recommendation regarding the implementation and progress in improving student literacy. The facilitator will provide ongoing support DEED with communication regarding data and outcomes.
In May of 2022, the Alaska legislature passed the Alaska Reads Act – a statute aimed at improving educational outcomes for Alaska youth by targeting reading delays statewide. One component of the Act directs the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) to convene an advisory panel to review and comment on the effectiveness of the programs created by the department and the regulations adopted by the State Board of Education to implement programs designed to increase student reading outcomes.
The panel will provide recommendations and guidance to the board, DEED, and the legislature on how to integrate early education and reading programs with tribal compacting or programs focused on cultural education within the department. The panel will also discuss support for reading in Alaska Native language or other non-English languages. They will collectively represent regions of the state including teachers, administrators, parents of K-3 students, stakeholders from indigenous language immersion programs, stakeholders from early education groups, and researchers of best practices for improving literacy performance.
