The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development will hold a regular quarterly meeting and a professional development workshop June 7-8, 2023. The board meeting will be held at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Chambers, 144 N. Binkley Street, Soldotna, Alaska. Public participation for the meeting will be in person and through the digital platform Zoom. The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. on June 7, 2023, and the quarterly board meeting will begin on June 8, 2023, at 8:15 a.m.
The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items starting at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023. Oral comment is limited to three minutes per person and five minutes per group. The purpose of the meeting is to hold a professional development workshop, work session, and a business meeting.
Topics at the professional development workshop include Mt. Edgecumbe High School (MEHS) policy manual update, Library, Archives, and Museum’s Stratton Library & Sheldon Jackson Museum, tribal compacting update, and State Board committee meetings, reports, and discussion.
Topics at the work session include legislative and budget update, Alyeska Reading Academy and Institute, computer science state plan, State Board of Education’s Career & Technical Education Committee awards for recognition, regulations for public comment (virtual education consortium regulations and interscholastic activities regulation), adoption of proposed statewide screening tool regulation, and MEHS advisory board appointments.
Topics at the business meeting include approval of the FY2024 DEED budget, Alyeska Reading Academy and Institute, computer science state plan, State Board of Education’s Career & Technical Education Committee awards for recognition, approve regulations for public comment (virtual education consortium regulations and interscholastic activities regulation), approve adoption of proposed statewide screening tool regulation, approve MEHS advisory board appointments. The board will hear standing reports on the department’s divisions and the commissioner’s report, will select the next year’s calendar of meeting dates and locations, will consider board subcommittee appointments, select board officers, and will consider approval of the January 25, 2023, February 23, 2023, and March 14-16, 2023 meeting minutes.
The board also plans to hold two executive sessions, one for attorney consultation and one to conduct the Commissioner’s annual evaluation.
The board may amend its published agenda. Agenda times are estimates only, and the board may consider agenda items out of order without amending its agenda. The board also reserves the right to adjourn at a time later than estimated on the published agenda.
