The State of Alaska, Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) will hold a virtual public hearing to offer citizens the opportunity to provide public comment and input into the state’s plan for spending $2,288,000 of CDBG-MIT funding. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocated this funding through Federal Register Notice 6239–N–01 on January 6, 2021.
CDBG-MIT funds represent an opportunity for the State of Alaska to use this assistance in areas impacted by the Cook Inlet Earthquake to carry out strategic and high-impact projects that will mitigate disaster risks and reduce future losses. While it is impossible to eliminate all risks, CDBG-MIT funds will help communities mitigate against future disaster risks and coordinate State and local planning activities. This funding is separate from the over $35 million in Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds HUD allocated to the state.
The virtual hearing will:
- Explain what mitigation is and how CDBG-MIT funding may be used
- Allow members of the public to provide comments and ask questions
- Offer interactive sessions focused on different mitigation topics
