Notice of City of Fort Yukon Landfill Permit

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) proposes to replace Solid Waste Disposal Permit #SW3A092-22 for the Fort Yukon Rabbit Subdivision landfill with a new comprehensive Solid Waste Disposal Permit No. SW3CP001-26 for the operation of a Class III municipal waste landfill and a separate inert waste landfill.

APPLICANT INFORMATION:

Landowner: Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich’in Tribal Government. Leased to City of Fort Yukon.

Landfill Operator: City of Fort Yukon

Locations:

  • Class III municipal waste landfill: 20 acres in Section 16, Township 20N, Range 12E, Fairbanks Meridian. Longitude -145.190933, Latitude 66.556950
  • Inert Waste landfill with a Recycling Area: 40 acres in Section 15, Township 20N, Range 12E, Fairbanks Meridian. Longitude -145.182363, Latitude 66.569091

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The municipal waste landfill and the inert waste landfill will serve the 550 residents of Fort Yukon.  It is estimated that the community will produce 401 tons of solid waste per year. The 20-acre municipal landfill site will include a solid waste disposal cell, a cell for animal waste, a contingency cell for honeybucket or natural disaster waste, a stockpile of cover materials, a burn unit, and drainage controls, all within a fenced area. The 40-acre inert waste site will include a disposal cell for inert wastes and a gravel pad for the safe pre-disposal processing and storage of inert wastes such as junk vehicles and white goods. This area may also serve as secured overflow storage for municipal solid waste heavy equipment. Both sites are secured and will be fully fenced.

The new permit is needed because of the addition of the municipal waste landfill. Land was made available near the local Long Range Radar Site that will allow for operations and a landfill design that are more protective of human health and the environment. The City of Fort Yukon desires to move the municipal waste landfill to this location for these reasons, and also because it is further from residential areas.
