Public meeting April 1st on grant to connect Bonanza Creek forestry roads with trails in Tanana Valley

Interior Alaska Trails and Parks Foundation is partnering with the State Division of Forestry to apply for a grant from State Parks to build four miles of trail connections between forestry roads in the Tanana Valley State Forest. The project would create all-season multiple-use trails (for motorized and non-motorized recreation), linking the existing 35-mile complex of Rosie Creek forestry roads (to be improved for recreational use this summer) to more than 18 miles of forestry roads in the Zasada and Bonanza Creek Road networks, to the west.

The project would also provide important recreational improvements like directional signs, map kiosks, and GPS map links along the way. If approved, the project could also include interpretive materials about the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, through which the trail connectors would pass.

Members of the public interested in the proposed trail connectors in the Bonanza Creek Area may attend a virtual public meeting on April 1st from 6-7:30pm, on Zoom:

Meeting ID:  950 5137 7495

Passcode:  forestry

Proposed Project Timeline: 15 July 2022 through 30 September 2022

The Bonanza Creek area offers an opportunity to combine a working state forest with a well-signed and well-maintained recreational trail. Forestry roads in the area are already used as trails by bikers, ATV users, skiers, hunters, snowmachiners, dogsledders, runners and other users. The trail connections, as well as directional signs and information, will make a more interesting recreational route for residents and visitors, while still providing for forestry research and harvest in the State Forest.

Those unable to attend the meeting may submit comments and questions about the proposed project to Geoff Orth (gcorth@straydogs.us) with Interior Alaska Trails and Parks Foundation no later than 5pm on April 28.

See the attached public notice for a map of the proposed trails.
