Meeting of the Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development
The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development will hold a regular quarterly meeting on June 10-11, 2020, via audio conference. To help mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the offices and boardroom of the Department of Education and Early Development in Juneau have been closed to public in-person traffic. Public participation for the meeting will be through the Legislative Information Office (LIO) live streaming. The board meeting will begin on June 10, 2020, at 8:45 a.m. and will recess at approximately 1:00 p.m. for the remainder of the day. The board will resume its meeting on June 11, 2020, at 8:30 a.m.
The purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session and a business meeting.
Topics at the work session include the COVID-19 department update, the school construction and major maintenance lists, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) State Plan; renewal applications for the Twindly Bridge Charter School and the Hooper Bay Charter School; regulations to go out for public comment regarding temporary certificates, energy efficiency for facilities, state museum fees, military training credits, and library standards; the adoption of school broadband assistance grant regulations as emergency regulations; the adoption of regulations regarding ESSA accountability and assessments; and the board’s review of the DEED budget.
Topics at the business meeting include the DEED budget, school construction and major maintenance lists, the charter school renewals listed above, the opening of a comment period for, or the adoption of, the regulations listed above. The board will take standing reports on the department’s divisions and the commissioner’s report, and will consider approval of the December 4, 2019, January 20, 2020, February 26, 2020, March 25, 2020, April 6, 2020, and April 22, 2020 meeting minutes. The board also plans to hold an executive session to conduct the commissioner’s annual evaluation.
The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items on June 10, 2020, starting at approximately 9:00 a.m. Oral comment is limited to three minutes per person and five minutes per group. For comment regarding regulations the board is considering for adoption, only oral comments may be provided at this time, as the written comment period has closed. Public comment can be made for this meeting, during this time only, via the Legislative Information Office (LIO) streaming by calling 1-844-586-9085 if you are outside of Juneau or Anchorage. In the event there are more than two hours of public comment, the board may move to amend the agenda to extend the oral hearing.
