SHARP – Description

Alaska’s SHARP Program provides recruitment and retention services for Alaska’s healthcare workforce.  The purpose of SHARP is to recruit and retain healthcare professionals to serve in DHSS-designated healthcare service locations in exchange for the repayment of qualifying education loans and/or payment of direct incentive, pursuant to a signed SHARP memorandum of agreement with the State of Alaska.

SHARP-1 – Component:

“SHARP-1 Component,” means Alaska's first state-operated support-for-service program effort.  It is based on the state's receipt of competitive HRSA partnership grants from the federal State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP).  Alaska has now received four SLRP grant awards from federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  All SHARP-1 contracts are 50 percent HRSA-funded (at maximum), with the other 50 percent (at minimum) derived from assorted non-federal sources.  SHARP-1 contracts provide for education loan repayment on behalf of selected primary care clinicians who provide healthcare services in federally designated Health Profession Shortage Area (HPSA) locations.

SHARP Council Members:

Alaska’s SHARP Council is a deliberative body composed of up to 15 voting agencies, with at least four (4) more as ex-officio. Alaska Statute 18.29 requires that a permanent interagency advisory body be convened, and meet at least quarterly.

SHARP Council has identified a SHARP-1 Committee, which has been asked to review data regarding the most recent set of SHARP-1 clinician applicants.  Based on this review, the SHARP-1 Committee will issue recommendation(s) to admit eligible and prioritized clinician candidates, if any.

The SHARP-1 Committee is currently composed from Representatives of each of at least the following Council member organizations:  AK Commission on Post-Secondary Education, AK Mental Health Trust Authority, AK Native Health Board, AK Nurses Association, and AK Primary Care Association.  Other Council member organizations are also welcome to participate in this SHARP-1 Committee meeting.
