Meeting Notice: Department Seeking Public Input on Potential Zip Line Regulations
The Department of Labor and Workforce Development will conduct a public meeting seeking recommendations regarding the adoption of construction and inspection standards for zip lines. The meeting will be held at noon on Thursday, July 12 at the department’s Mechanical Inspection office located at 1251 Muldoon Road, Suite 113 in Anchorage. Interested parties are encouraged to register for the meeting, as relevant materials will be distributed in advance.
Zip lines are regulated in Alaska as recreational devices. When the recreational device regulations were developed, there was no recognized construction code for zip lines. The Association for Challenge Course Technology, in partnership with the American National Standards Institute, has since developed a nationally recognized standard for zip line construction. The department is seeking feedback regarding adopting the ANSI/ACCT 03-2016 as the construction standard for zip lines.
The department is also seeking industry feedback and public discussion of the appropriate level of qualification for zip line inspectors. The Association for Challenge Course Technology Inspector Level I or II are under consideration as the official standard for zip line inspectors.
To register or to obtain information about how to participate in the meeting telephonically, please contact Anchorage.LSS-MI@alaska.gov or call (907) 269-4929. For those who are unable to participate in the meeting but would like to submit comments or questions, please email William.Harlan@alaska.gov.
After evaluating public interest and stakeholder input, the department may proceed with a formal regulation process. Public comments will also be accepted at that time.
