Current Status
Right-of-way negotiations are ongoing.
Utility relocation design is nearly complete.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2019, dependent on right-of-way negotiations and utility agreements, which are out of the Department’s control.
Project Description
Crash mapping led the Department to nominate the Palmer-Wasilla Highway for a Highway Safety Improvement Program project in 2011. The resulting project will widen the Palmer-Wasilla Highway to create a center two-way left-turn lane, which will reduce crashes by removing turning drivers from the through lane. The multi-use pathway will remain on the north side but will be relocated. The team recognizes that more lanes may be necessary to meet long-term traffic demand and additional lanes may be considered in the future when funding allows. Funding for this project is included in the Highway Safety Improvement Program funding plan for federal fiscal year 2019.
