Notice of Intent to Begin Eng. & Env. Studies: JNU Auke Bay Ferry Terminal Modifications & Improvements Project SAMHS-00084 / 0933047

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the Alaska Division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)proposes to improve mooring and berthing capabilities at the existing facility and to upgrade the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal building.

The project would
     • Decommission existing on-site wastewater treatment system.
     • Install new on-site sewage treatment disposal system for the terminal building
     • Install 5-pile dolphin and floating fender at the East Stern Berth
     • Add new shore-tie power connection down the East Berth transfer bridge and connection
        to the existing uplands electrical system
     • Make terminal building refurbishmetns which would:
          o upgrade the bathroom
          o remodel the ticket counter
          o add new interior and exterior doors
          o replace the roof

Construction could begin as early as winter 2018.

Development of this proposed project would follow a process required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Based on project location and scope of work, the environmental document would be a categorical exclusion (CE). Possible affected resources include wetlands, waters of the U.S., eagles, and cultural or historic properties.

The project would comply with all Acts & Executive Orders including 
     • National Historic Preservation Act – Sect.106
     • Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Mgt Act
     • Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act      • Clean & Clean Water Acts
     • EO-11988 (Manage Floodplains)         • EO-11990 (Protect Wetlands)
     • EO-12898 (Environmental Justice)      • EO-13112 (Invasive Species)
