REQUEST FOR COMMENTS

Pelican Main Street Bridge (No. 1268) Improvements
Project No. SFHWY00063

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), proposes to conduct maintenance work on the wooden boardwalk in Pelican, Alaska.  The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, with a local match.

The project would replace deteriorating timber members in kind and strengthen the Pelican Boardwalk structure with additional stringers in order to extend the life of the structure and to upgrade to meet minimum standards to safely accommodate the city’s fire truck.

The project would be limited to the existing boardwalk, including replacement of pilings, installation of concrete footings, replacement in kind of decking, railings and stringers, and installation of additional stringers to strengthen the boardwalk to meet safety requirements for passage of the fire truck.

The proposed project would

      • Replace 182 deteriorating stringers

      • Replace 17 deteriorating creosote treated timber piles with new creosote 
         treated timber piles.

      • Band 32 piles.

      • Cast 8 footings in place.

      • Repair 5 columns.

      • Replace 10 failing creosote treated cap beams.

      • Replace 4 x-braces.

      • Remove and replace in kind handrail and decking board in some places.

Construction is projected for 2017 / 2018.

Development of this proposed project would follow a process required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Based on project location and scope of work, the environmental document would be a categorical exclusion (CE).

The project would comply with all authorities including: 

      • National Historic Preservation Act – Sect.106  

      • Anadromous Fish Conservation Act

      • Bald & Gold Eagle Protection Act

Comments on the proposal from interested persons will assist us in completing the project design and preparing the project’s environmental documentation.

Comments are requested by August 11, 2017.
