PROJECT SUMMARY AND LOCATION: The Lake of the Hills Homeowners Association has applied to DEC for an aquatic pesticide use permit to apply herbicide to Lake of the Hills in Anchorage to control nuisance aquatic vegetation.
The proposed products are Littora, EPA registration number 67690-53 and SonarGenesis, EPA registration number 67690-54. Littora has the active ingredient Diquat and SonarGenesis has the active ingredient Fluridone. Treatment is proposed to occur between May and September throughout the duration of the permit.
PROJECT NEED: Nuisance vegetation has become a hazard to recreational activities in Lake of the Hills, including swimming, boating, and float plane operation. Physical or mechanical controls are inappropriate, as these methods are prohibitively expensive and do not remove root structures or rhizomes, which can then re-sprout. In addition, some plant species can reproduce from small plant fragments left behind by physical methods of removal.
