NOTICE OF UTILITY REQUEST TO RELINQUISH
ELIGIBLE TELECOMMUNICATIONS CARRIER DESIGNATION
The REGULATORY COMMISSION OF ALASKA (Commission) gives notice that on
January 20, 2017, MTA Communications, LLC d/b/a MTA Wireless (MTA-W) filed a petition to relinquish its designation as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier for wireless telecommunications service in the study area served by the Matanuska Telephone Association, Inc., effective June 30, 2017. The petition states further that MTA-W intends to discontinue wireless service as of August 1, 2017. Docket No. U-17-005 was opened to address this matter.
In support of its petition, MTA-W states that technological and business challenges have made providing services unsustainable. MTA-W has contracted to sell much of its underlying infrastructure, has provided notice of its intent to cease providing wireless service to its customers, and is actively transitioning its current customers to other carriers. MTA-W notes that three other wireless service providers currently provide service in the Matanuska Telephone Association, Inc. study area, and that no additional construction will be required to continue service to transferred customers.
