The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) plans to replace the Iliamna River Bridge and is making the old bridge (red bridge) available to anyone willing to move and assume the maintenance and preservation responsibilities as a historical structure. The steel-truss bridge with timber decking was originally built to cross Eagle River near Anchorage in 1937. It is 181 feet long and 12.3 feet wide. It was relocated to the Iliamna River on the Williamsport-to-Pile-Bay Road in 1946. It was modified, including post-tensioning and welding reinforcements, in the 1990s. The bridge has been determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. As such, DOT&PF is making the bridge available for potential re-use by an interested party.
DOT&PF will pay $30,000 to help defray costs of bridge removal and transportation. Any potential recipient will need to remove the bridge and transport it to a new location and must agree to maintain the bridge. DOT&PF inspected the bridge in 2003 and found it structurally deficient. It has not been in use since 2003. The bridge is in a remote location and is available as-is. Potential recipients are advised to have the bridge independently evaluated by qualified professionals for methods of removal, transport, reassembly, and final use. The recipient will be required to enter into a contract with the DOT&PF that will require: adherence to all environmental regulations when removing and relocating the bridge, proof of adequate property interests for transporting and reinstalling the bridge. All work performed with DOT&PF Right of Way will be by a Contractor preapproved by the DOT&PF. Insurance requirements and wage rate requirements must be met.
