PUBLIC NOTICE – FORT KNOX MINE
Renewal Application and Draft State Decisions
Fort Knox Mine is an open pit gold mine located 15 air miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska in the Fish Creek drainage. Mine operations are operated by Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. (FGMI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kinross Gold corp. The project area encompasses about 8,001 acres including 5,828 acres under the Millsite Lease, 2,052 acres of surface rights purchased from the Mental Health Trust Land Office, and 121 acres of private land. FGMI requested the renewal of state authorizations and updated the mine’s Waste Management Permit, Plan of Operations, Reclamation and Closure Plan, and supporting documents.
On February 12, 2014, the State of Alaska is releasing application renewal documents for Fort Knox Mine’s existing mining operation and the following draft state decisions for a 30-day public review and comment period:
- Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, draft Waste Management Permit No. 2014DB0002 for disposing of mine tailings, ore on a heap leach pad, and other mine-related wastes from the Fort Knox Mine.
- Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land, and Water, draft Plan of Operations Amendment Approval (F20149852POO) for expanding the Walter Creek Valley Heap Leach Facility and the Barnes Creek Waste Rock Dump.
- Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land, and Water, draft Reclamation and Closure Plan Approval (F230149852POO) and closure cost estimates.
