The DNR, DMLW, Northern Region Lands Section has received a public easement application from the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT) for a proposed road from the Elliott Highway near Manley Hot Springs to Tanana.

LOCATION:

The requested easement is located between the communities of Tofty (at the end of the Tofty Road) and the south bank of the Yukon river near Tanana; USGS Quadrangles Tanana A-2, A-3, and A-4. The project is located within the Doyon Ltd. Region and some corporation lands or interests may be affected by the project. The project is also located within lands owned by Tozitna, Limited and may also affect a number of private surface and subsurface interests. The requested easement under consideration here would apply only to State lands or interests. The site is located within the Unorganized Borough. The requested easement is located within the following lands of the Fairbanks Meridian:

Township 4 North, Range 17 West, Sections 31, 32, 33
Township 3 North, Range 18 West, Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Township 4 North, Range 18 West, Sections 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36
Township 4 North, Range 19 West, Sections 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 35

PROPOSED PROJECT:

The DOT submitted an easement application on December 12, 2012 for a public easement within multiple sections of state land to augment the existing State highway system by constructing a spur extending from the Elliott Highway near Manley Hot Springs, through Tofty, and ultimately to the Yukon River near Tanana. DOT has stated that the road is being constructed to provide access to the community of Tanana.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land & Water (DMLW) is considering issuing a public easement to the DOT for the road.  The requested easement is approximately 300 feet in width, containing approximately 541 acres. The total project length is approximately 36 miles; the requested easement would apply to State lands or interests comprising approximately 14.5 miles of the project.

DEADLINE FOR WRITTEN COMMENTS:

Written comments must be received in writing by the DMLW, Lands Section on or before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 in order to ensure consideration.
