LAS 36244 - FAA permit for weather observation system at Coffman Cove Seaplane Base

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC AND REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION WEATHER CAMERA PROGRAM

Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Southeast Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT: Federal Aviation Administration Weather Camera Program
PROJECT NAME: LAS 36244

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: Coffman Cove Seaplane Base is located in Coffman Cove, on the northeastern side of Prince of Wales Island.
LEGAL DESCRIPTION: Section 35, Township 67 South, Range 81 East, Copper River Meridian

REQUESTED ACTIVITY: The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land and Water (DMLW) has received a Land Use Permit application from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the installation of a Visual Weather Observation System (VWOS) to support aviation at the Coffman Cove Seaplane Base in Coffman Cove. The structure of the VWOS is 6'x6' and the entire footprint would encompass 12'x40'. This includes a tilt-down tower and its supporting electronics. The requested permit term is 20 years.

PROPOSED DATES OF USE:
Start: October 12, 2026
End: October 11, 2031

DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS: October 2, 2026

The public is invited to comment on this activity. The purpose of this notice is to gather input before a decision is made on this activity. To ensure consideration, written comments must be received by the Division of Mining, Land and Water at the Southeast Regional Land Office, 400 Willoughby Avenue/PO Box 111020, Juneau, AK 99811-1020 on or before 5:00 PM on the date noted above. After review and adjudication, we may issue an authorization with stipulations for the activity. The activity may be modified during the review and adjudication process.
