Meeting of the Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development

The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development will hold a regular quarterly meeting and an annual retreat on March 28-29, 2019 in Juneau. The retreat will be held in the Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building at 395 Whittier Street, and the board meeting will be held in the first-floor board room at 801 West 10th Street. The retreat will begin at 8:30 a.m on March 28 and the quarterly board meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m on March 29.

The purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session and a business meeting.

Topics at the work session include a review of the school construction and major maintenance list, a legislative and budget update, an update on the UAA School of Education initial teacher preparation programs, a review of three charter school renewals (Eagle Academy, STrEaM Academy, and Kaleidoscope Charter School), a curriculum presentation by Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a guest presentation by the City of Sitka on the Sitka Seaplane Base, regulations to go out for public comment regarding K-12 science standards, computer science standards, digital literacy standards, and AdvancED standards, and adoption of regulations regarding grade 9 math sublevel scores and basic competency exams.

Topics at the business meeting include the regulations listed above, approval of the school construction and major maintenance list, approval of the three charter school renewals listed above, standing reports on the department’s divisions, the commissioner’s report, appointments to the Museum Collections Advisory Committee, approval of the Assistant Commissioner and Executive Secretary appointments, approval of the December 18, 2018, February 4, 2019, and February 14, 2019 meeting minutes, and an executive session to conduct the commissioner’s annual evaluation.

Immediately following the board meeting, the advisory board of the Alaska Public School Trust Fund will hold its annual meeting at 4:45 p.m. in the same location to review the trust’s finances and investments.

The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items starting at approximately 8:10 a.m. Oral comment is limited to three minutes per person and five minutes per group. Public comment can be made for this meeting, during this time only, in person or by calling 1-844-586-9085 if you are outside of Juneau or Anchorage. For participation from Anchorage, call 563-9085 and from Juneau, call 586-9085.

This meeting will be live-streamed through the Legislative Information Office (LIO) over http://www.akl.tv (audio only) beginning at 8:00 a.m. Click on the meeting name to listen to the proceedings. When public comment is over, the meeting will continue to be broadcast at the above website.

Oral comment also can be made by visiting your local LIO. The following LIOs will participate: Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Cordova, Delta Junction, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Glennallen, Homer, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Mat-Su, Nome, Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Tok, Unalaska, Valdez, and Wrangell. In the event there are more than two hours of public comment, the board may move to amend the agenda to extend the oral hearing to accommodate those present before 8:00 a.m. who did not have an opportunity to comment. The board also reserves the right to adjourn at a later time.
