The Southeast Alaska Watershed Council (SAWC) has applied to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for a permit to apply pesticides to invasive weeds growing in the margins of water bodies in various areas near Juneau.
The following project is proposed and is being reviewed by the appropriate regulatory programs. DEC requests comments from the public regarding the permit application. Copies of the application are available on-line or upon request.

PROJECT SUMMARY AND LOCATION: SAWC has applied to DEC for an aquatic pesticide use permit to apply pesticide to invasive weeds growing in the margins of water bodies in various locations near Juneau.
The proposed pesticide is Roundup Custom Herbicide, with EPA registration number 524-343, with active ingredient glyphosate.
Treatment would occur between April and November throughout the duration of the permit.
PROJECT NEED: Reed canarygrass, Bohemian knotweed, and perennial sowthistle are invasive plants that are capable of outcompeting and displacing native plants that provide important ecological functions for fish and wildlife. Manual and mechanical control methods are ineffective or not practical for these plants.
