Kaltag Airport Improvements
Open Comment Period
Project #: NFAPT00254
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is soliciting comments for proposed airport improvements at the Kaltag Airport, Alaska. The Kaltag Airport improvements are FAA funded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
The purpose of the project is to address Kaltag Airport deficiencies and bring the airport to current standards to meet criteria identified in the Alaska Statewide Transportation Plan (ASTP), the Alaska Aviation System Plan (AASP), and current FAA design standards.
The proposed project would provide the community of Kaltag a safe, reliable, and cost-effective facility that would meet the community’s transportation needs. There are local roads within the community, but none that directly connect the community to outside urban areas and river barge service is limited to summer months. While small boats, all-terrain vehicles, and snow machines are used for inter-village and subsistence travel, Kaltag relies solely on air transportation for major commerce, supplies, fuel, access, and medical evacuation needs.
Project work would include the following components:
1) Construct a new SREB.
2) Demolish the existing SREB.
3) Resurface the existing 4,000-foot runway.
4) Reconstruct and/or relocate the taxiway, apron, and access road.
5) Replace culverts under taxiway.
6) Apply dust palliative to airport surfaces.
7) Rehabilitate the airport lighting system.
8) Improve or re-establish airport drainage.
9) Remove airspace obstructions in the approaches.
Material will be used from an existing material site. The remaining required material will be barged in from existing, permitted material sources determined by the contractor. Transport of this material and equipment will be through a combination of air and water access utilizing the existing airport and barge landing. A winter ice bridge across the Kaltag River will be needed to support transport.
This project is being developed in accordance with the following Executive Orders (EO):
EO12898 Environmental Justice,
EO 11990 Wetland Involvement,
EO 11593 Protection and Enhancement of Cultural Resources,
EO11988 Floodplain Management,
and EO13112 Invasive Species, as amended by EO 13751.
