Notice of Proposal to Renew a Solid Waste Disposal Permit to the Native Village of Northway to Operate a Class III Municipal Solid Waste Landfill



The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) proposes to renew Solid Waste Disposal Permit No. SW3A145-25, to the Native Village of Northway, to operate a Class III Municipal Solid Waste Landfill.  Public notice is required due to an increase in the size of the landfill.

APPLICANT INFORMATION:
Location:  The Northway Village is located on the east bank of the Nabesna River, approximately 44 highway miles southeast of Tok. The legal description of the landfill is: Section 30, Township 14 North, Range 19 East, Lot 7, Copper River Meridian.  The landfill is operated by the Northway Village Council on property owned by Northway Natives Incorporated.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This public notice is for an existing landfill that has been operated since 1986. The landfill is currently permitted and serves the 229 residents of Northway.  To provide for continued waste disposal, the landfill operator has increased the size of the landfill from 2 acres to 3 acres, all within the Lot 7 property.  The renewed permit will recognize and approve the increase in area.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION:
ADEC is seeking comment only on the proposed increased area of the landfill.  Notice is given that any person interested may present written comments relevant to the proposed permit to ADEC.  Written comments will be included in the record if received before 5:00 p.m. on April 30, 2020.  Submit written comments regarding the project to Sarah Durand, ADEC Division of Environmental Health, Solid Waste Program, 610 University Avenue, Fairbanks, Alaska 99709.  Comments can also be submitted by fax (907-451-2761) or email sarah.durand@alaska.gov
