Request for Comments - Lake Lucile Draft Total Maximum Daily Loads for an Impaired Water Body

Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation

Division of Water, Water Quality Standards, Assessment and Restoration Program

Draft Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) for Lead, Zinc, and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon in Lakebed Sediments for Lake Lucile in Wasilla, Alaska Available for Public Comment

Lake Lucile, Wasilla, AK, is included on Alaska’s Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List of Impaired Waterbodies as polluted for lead, zinc, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the lakebed sediments. Water quality samples repeatedly demonstrate these pollutants exceed the state’s allowed limits. The majority of the metals and PAH pollutant loading to the lake comes as stormwater runoff from the urban land areas that drain to Lake Lucile through the piped stormwater system. A draft TMDL has been developed for the recovery of Lake Lucile and is available for public comment.

The Clean Water Act (Section 303(d)(1)(C)) requires TMDLs to be developed for impaired (polluted) waterbodies. A TMDL is a pollution budget. It sets the maximum amount of a pollutant (or pollutants) that may be discharged into an impaired waterbody while still meeting the state’s allowed limits, and suggests ways to achieve this goal.
