Notice of Application for a Permit to Apply Pesticides - City of Valdez - Ruth Pond Aquatic Pesticed Use Permit

The City of Valdez has applied to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for a permit to apply herbicide to control weeds in a pond in Valdez, Alaska.

The following project is proposed and is being reviewed by the appropriate regulatory programs.  DEC requests comments from the public regarding the permit application. Copies of the application are available on-line http://dec.alaska.gov/eh/pest/index.htm , attached to this notice or upon request.

WRITTEN COMMENTS: Comments must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. Alaska Standard Time on January 12, 2018. To ensure that your comments are considered in relation to this application, please include the project name at the beginning of your comment. PROJECT SUMMARY AND LOCATION: The City of Valdez has applied to DEC for an aquatic pesticide use permit to apply herbicide to a pond located at the corner of S. Hazelet Ave. and Fidalgo Drive to control various pond weeds.

The proposed product is Sonar AS Aquatic Herbicide, EPA registration number 67690-4, with the active ingredient Fluridone. Treatment is proposed to occur between May and August throughout the duration of the permit.

PROJECT NEED:  The recreational pond has become overgrown with pondweed which inhibits recreational use.
