Notice of proposal to issue a Solid Waste Disposal Permit to the City of Hydaburg to operate a Class III Municipal Solid Waste Landfill

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) proposes to issue Solid Waste Disposal Permit No. SW3A162, to the City of Hydaburg, to operate a Class III Municipal Solid Waste Landfill.

APPLICANT INFORMATION: Location: The City of Hydaburg is located on the north shore of Sukkwan Strait which connects to Cordova Bay through Hetta Inlet and is the southernmost city on Prince of Wales Island.  The legal description of the landfill is: Township 77 South, Range 84 East, NW ¼ of the NW ¼ of Section 17 and the SW ¼ of Section 8, Copper River Meridian.  The landfill is owned by The Haida Corporation and operated by the City of Hydaburg.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The public notice is for an existing landfill that has not been previously permitted.  The landfill serves 367 residents of Hydaburg.  It is estimated that the community will produce 469 tons of solid waste per year. The 2 acre site includes a gated solid waste disposal cell, a burn unit, and a salvage and storage area for vehicles and scrap metal.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: ADEC is seeking comment regarding the proposed project only.  Notice is given that any person interested may present written comments relevant to the proposed Permit to ADEC.  Written comments will be included in the record if received before 5:00 p.m. on June 29, 2015.  Submit written comments regarding the project to Sandra Woods, ADEC Division of Environmental Health, Solid Waste Program, 410 W. Willoughby Ave., Suite 303, Juneau, AK 99811.  Comments may also be sent by fax to (907) 465-5362 or by email to sandra.woods@alaska.gov .
