Air Quality Control: 60 Day Notice of Mandatory Registration Requirement of Commercial Wood Sellers

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) is starting the 60 day countdown to the mandatory registration requirement date for commercial wood sellers in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Nonattainment Area. State regulations 18 AAC 50.076 outline the registration requirements.

Portions of FNSB do not meet the federal health based standards for fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which is found in wood smoke and other combustion source exhausts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reclassified the FNSB PM2.5 nonattainment area from moderate to serious effective June 9, 2017; Federal Register, Vol. 82, No. 89, 21711. As a result of EPA’s reclassification, and pursuant to 18 AAC 50.015(b)(3) and 18 AAC 50.076(d)(1)-(3), commercial wood seller registration with ADEC will become mandatory in 60 days on August 15, 2017.

Detailed information regarding this requirement can be found online at http://burnwise.alaska.gov/moisture_disclosure_program.htm.

Wood sellers may register for free either online at http://dec.alaska.gov/Applications/Air/airtoolsweb/WoodMoistureProgram, or in person at the ADEC Offices located at 610 University Ave, Fairbanks.  You may contact Steve Hoke at (907) 451-5172 for more information.
