Meeting of the Alaska State
Board of Education & Early Development
The Alaska State Board of Education & Early Development
will hold a regularly scheduled meeting on September 18, 2014, starting at 8:00
a.m. and September 19, 2014, starting at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will be held at
the Anchorage School District board room, 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd.,
Anchorage, AK. The public is invited to attend.
The board
will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items on Thursday, September
18. Comment at this oral hearing is limited to three minutes per person and
five minutes per group. Public comment
can be made for this meeting, during this time only, by calling 1-855-463-5009
if you are outside of Juneau. For participation from Juneau, call 463-5009.
This meeting will be streamed through the Legislative Information Office
over http://www.alaskalegislature.tv/ beginning at 8:00 a.m. on September 18, and
8:30 a.m. on September 19 (audio only). Click on the meeting name to listen to
the meeting proceedings. When public
comment is over, the meeting will continue to be broadcast at the above web
site.
Comment also can be made by visiting your local Legislative Information
Office (LIO). The following LIO’s will participate: Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Cordova,
Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Mat-Su, Nome, Seward, Sitka,
and Unalaska. For more information about LIO’s, call 465-4648. In
the event there are more than two hours of public comment, the board may move
to amend the agenda to extend the oral hearing to accommodate those present
before 7:55 a.m. who did not have an opportunity to comment. The board also reserves the right to
adjourn at a later time.
The purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session and a
business meeting. Topics at the work session include Mount Edgecumbe’s science
curriculum, Career & Technical Education, Pre-Kindergarten, funding,
teacher certification and PRAXIS update, Chief School Administrator and Superintendent,
arts education, assessment development and technology practice test. The board
will consider nine regulations to go out for public comment regarding charter
schools, correspondence, accountability updates, residential school
application, assessment updates, natural and cultural history repository, math credits,
restraint and seclusion, and standards. The board also will consider adopting
regulations regarding high school exit exam elimination and challenging of courses.
Topics at the business meeting include regulations, listed
above, that may be adopted. Also, standing reports on teaching and learning
support, assessment, rural education, budget and legislation, Mt. Edgecumbe
High School, legal matters, the Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums,
and the Commissioner’s report. The board will consider approving the minutes of
recent meetings.
The
board may amend its published agenda. Agenda times are estimates only and the
board may consider agenda items out of order without amending its agenda.
