Background:

In October 2008, Congress passed the Broadband Data Improvement Act (BDIA). In 2009, the State Broadband Data and Development (SBDD) Grant Program was funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In November of that year, Alaska received $1.9 million for broadband planning and mapping. The Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development was tasked with administering the grant and working with its contractor, Connected Nation, to map Alaska’s current broadband services and adoption. In September 2010, Alaska received an additional $4.4 million in grant funding to further facilitate broadband mapping, planning and adoption, and that same month the first statewide broadband map was launched, which can be found at [www.connectak.org]. The grant included the requirement for the task force, which was established in February 2011. The task force will meet on a scheduled basis to develop the broadband plan.
